Expressing “deep” concern over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said that India is for peace and since the beginning of the war, New Delhi’s effort has been to get Moscow and Kiev back to the table of dialogue and diplomacy. Because differences cannot be resolved by violence.
Jaishankar, who arrived here from Cyprus on the second leg of his two-nation tour, made the remarks while addressing the Indian diaspora in Austria on Sunday evening. Jaishankar said that this (Ukraine conflict) is indeed a matter of very deep concern – Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in September (that) we really believe that this is not an era of war. You cannot resolve differences and issues through violence.
“Thus, our effort from the very beginning has been to urge (Russia and Ukraine) to return to dialogue and diplomacy – the Prime Minister himself has spoken on several occasions with President (Vladimir) Putin and President (Volodymyr) Zelensky,” he said. I have personally spoken to my colleagues in Russia and Ukraine.
India has repeatedly called upon Russia and Ukraine to return to the path of diplomacy and dialogue and end the ongoing conflict. Prime Minister Modi has spoken to the Presidents of Russia and Ukraine on several occasions and urged an immediate end to hostilities and a return to the path of diplomacy and dialogue to resolve the conflict.
On September 16 last year, Modi in his bilateral meeting with Russian President Putin in Uzbekistan had urged him to end the conflict, saying that today’s era is not of war. India has so far refrained from criticizing the Russian attack on Ukraine and has been maintaining that the crisis should be resolved through dialogue.
